 Disney Pixar Learning 2nd and 3rd Grade DISNEY PIXAR LEARNING 2ND AND 3RD GRADE This all-new Buzz Lightyear program effectively combines puzzle-based learning with fun arcade games. Playing as either Buzz or his female counterpart Mira Nova children embark on a series of missions in which they gather items scattered in space to defend the galaxy from the evil Zurg. Action begins in one of the four entertaining arcade style games. One for instance asks kids to race their spacecraft through a nebula avoiding obstacles and grabbing up requested items. There s also a Zurg attack game a canyon exploration task and a space mining challenge. Points are earned for a high scores list and as each set of items is collected another mission appears. These missions are pretty zany and include catching wandering space cows grabbing lost-in-space toilets and nabbing floating tires. "It s weird but fun!" reported one eight-year-old tester. Where does the learning come in Kids have to earn fuel for the arcade games and missions by playing four learning games. These take place on grids where Buzz and Mira have to slide cubes into position according to directions. One game has players making math equations another emphasizes spelling a third concentrates on reading and the fourth is a logic challenge. Difficulty levels automatically adjust and there are multiple solutions for each puzzle. General thinking skills get a good workout. Strengths of this program are its compelling format great animation and hilarious use of Buzz Lightyear humor-- on par with that of the film. Also notable are the numerous ways to customize the experience by using the options panel. Weaknesses include some confusing game play until kids figure things out and some responsivity issues in character control. Our testers also found that one game has to be played more often than others-- they kept running out of shield fuel and thus had to play the spelling game more often than the math reading and logic games. All things considered this is a solid choice especially for the summer months when you want kids to have fun but use their brains a bit too.
